Integrating evidence-based and strength-centered policies, programs and practices must be a primary goal in all service delivery to maximize resources and their benefits for consumers.


This workshop provides the contextual framework for a service delivery approach that is trauma informed and accounts for children, their families, unique populations, foster care settings and core approaches for engagement that are evidence-based and strength-centered.


The program covers various family engagement approaches including Family Group Decision Making, Family Team Meetings, Group Conferencing, Family Finding among others.  The program considers trauma reactions for the helper and care giver with strategies for building resiliency.

Social Workers: This program is co-sponsored by Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) for continuing education credit. CES, provider #1117 is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. CES maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 9/6/12-12/31/15. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers participating in this course receive 14 continuing education clock hours.

FACULTY


Harold "Pat" Patrick, MSW, LISW, Director, South Carolina Families First 

“Pat” Patrick, MSW, LISW is the Director of South Carolina Families First, a movement within the South Carolina Department of Social Services implementing Family Group Decision Making models statewide for families involved in the child welfare system. He has extensive experience in children services including child sexual abuse prevention programming, program development and service delivery in both residential and community based settings for children with severe emotional and behavioral disturbances and their families.
 
Mr. Patrick has served on a number of local, state, national and international committees and coalitions advocating for child sexual abuse prevention campaigns along with promoting family centered approaches and services including the National Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Coalition through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the National Fatherhood and Child Welfare Network. As a member of the South Carolina Trauma Informed Care Committee, he is currently working on bring trauma informed awareness and trauma focused service delivery to children and their families involved in the child welfare system.  
 
He received his BS from the College of Charleston and his MSW from the University of South Carolina. He is licensed as an Independent social worker in the state of South Carolina.
 
Julie Schneider, MA, County Director, South Carolina Dept. of Social Services
 
Julie has over 25 years of experience providing services to children and families. She provides training and education services to professionals, children, youth, families and their communities in the areas of child welfare, child sexual abuse prevention, therapeutic interventions, and alcohol and drug abuse/prevention. Julie currently serves as County Director in the South Carolina Dept of Social Services responsible for Beaufort County. Prior to that Julie served in various capacities including as Program Director of a residential treatment program for Carolina Youth Development Center and then as Regional Coordinator at South Carolina Department of Social Services’ Families First Programs. She later served as Program Director for Darkness to Light, Inc. where she managed an international group of facilitators for the child sexual abuse prevention program, “Stewards of Children"
 

Julie has spent the past 5 years learning and teaching about Family Group Decision Making (FGDM). She has taught, co-taught and coached some 300 coordinators to apply FGDM in conducting family meetings and group conferences interventions. Ms. Schneider herself has conducted over 100 family group conferences and presented at various FGDM conferences and presented at the American Humane Society’s International Conference on Family Group Decision Making.
