PROGRAM OUTLINE

This program is designed to introduce basic concepts and help in-house agency trainers get started on the path to becoming proficient MI Trainers. Acquiring the skills to train others  in MI has its challenges and yet can be very rewarding not to mention career enhancing.

Training internal training personnel on the skills for teaching/coaching MI can be beneficial in several other ways also. The agency will be in a position to provide ongoing internal MI training long after the initial outside resource has gone. They are also in a position t provide ongoing coaching to reinforce what was taught, and they can also train new employees where they will not have to wait for outside resources.

FOLLOW-UP SESSIONS (Recommended Option)

This best practice for training in-house trainers gives the participant intervals between sessions to receive training, some practice use of the skills, and then return for follow-up training and development to help address questions and challenges they encounter. Trainers idealy will experience the following stages;

a. the training to get essential MI information;

b. return to their practice and make use of the skills;

c. return to training and demonstrate experiences during the interval. Develop and add the next level; show proficiency in ability to conduct motivational interviewing;

d. return to practice and make use of these skills;

e. return to training and show proficiency in training motivational interviewing, develop finalized activities, curricula and presentations.

Previous MI Skills training required. Participants are encouraged to participate in the MI Skills training scheduled ahead of this one to gain an understanding of essential MI skills or to simply refresh what they already know.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

In-house agency training personnel and their colleagues.

“I liked that the information was tactical, action-oriented, and given from the perspective of organizational development. I liked that we were provided with specific tools (questionnaires and assessments) to utilize with our agencies. I am in strong agreement that we need to focus on internal processes and on staff outcomes as part of an evidence-based approach and I think it's great that the workshop highlighted this throughout “
